Saltwater intrusion compromised freshwater supplies in coastal aquifers, creating water security challenges. Mangrove forests and salt marshes provided natural protection against storms while serving as nurseries for fish and other marine life. Their destruction for coastal development removed these natural buffers and valuable habitats.
